Who can get Medicare
Eligibility is not the same as enrollment. You can qualify and still need to sign up so coverage starts on time.
You may qualify if you are
- Age 65 or older and a U.S. citizen, or a lawful permanent resident who has lived in the U.S. for at least 5 years
- Under 65 and have received Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for 24 months
- Diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)
- Diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and meet program rules
Automatic vs. you must sign up
If you already receive Social Security benefits before you turn 65, you are usually enrolled in Part A and Part B automatically.
If you are not yet receiving Social Security, apply during your Initial Enrollment Period so coverage is not delayed and you avoid late penalties.
Premium-free Part A
Most people get Part A at no monthly premium if they or a spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for about 10 years. Some people can buy Part A if they do not qualify for premium-free coverage.
